OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra has intensified the global debate over artificial general intelligence after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang declared that AGI has arrived.
Artificial intelligence has entered a new phase of debate after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang declared that artificial general intelligence (AGI) has arrived, pointing to OpenAI’s newly launched GPT-6 Astra as a major milestone.
OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Astra on Sept. 3, describing it as its most capable and aligned model. The company says the system represents a significant advance in computer use, web browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity, scientific research and professional work.
AGI generally refers to an AI system capable of performing a broad range of intellectual tasks rather than being limited to a specific function. Unlike conventional AI tools designed for individual applications, an AGI system is expected to demonstrate more general reasoning, learning and problem-solving abilities across different fields.
Huang congratulated OpenAI after the Astra launch and posted on X that “AGI has arrived,” linking the milestone to the rapid progression from ChatGPT to newer generations of AI systems. His statement has added fresh momentum to a long-running debate over whether current frontier models have reached, or are approaching, AGI.
OpenAI says Astra achieves state-of-the-art results across several demanding benchmarks. The company reports a 98% score on FrontierMath Tier 4, 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3 and 100% on ExploitBench. It also says the model can handle complex computer and browser tasks and perform demanding professional work.
One of the major changes highlighted by OpenAI is Astra’s ability to carry out multi-step tasks using computers and online tools. The model can create documents, spreadsheets and presentations, while also adapting when users change requirements or provide additional instructions.
These capabilities have strengthened the argument that advanced AI systems are moving beyond traditional chatbots toward agents capable of completing practical and complex tasks with greater autonomy.
However, Huang’s declaration does not by itself establish that Astra is universally accepted as AGI. The concept has no single universally accepted definition, and experts continue to debate what standards an AI system must meet before it can be classified as artificial general intelligence. OpenAI itself has framed Astra as a major step into the AGI era rather than relying solely on a universally agreed technical definition.
The rapid progress has also raised concerns about safety and oversight. OpenAI says Astra has significantly stronger monitoring and safeguards, particularly because of its advanced cybersecurity capabilities. The company said Astra is its first model to reach the “Critical” level under its Preparedness Framework.
