A weakening monsoon system continues to pull moisture into Pakistan, raising the likelihood of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and urban flooding across Karachi and several districts of Sindh.
KARACHI: Karachi is expected to receive rain accompanied by thunderstorms from Saturday afternoon or evening through August 3, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), as a weakening monsoon weather system continues to influence Sindh.
The PMD said the low-pressure system that previously formed over southern Madhya Pradesh has weakened and is now positioned near Rajasthan. Although the system is gradually losing strength, it continues to draw moist monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal into Pakistan, creating favorable conditions for widespread rainfall.
Meteorologists said the ongoing weather pattern, combined with a westerly weather system affecting northern parts of the country, is expected to trigger intermittent rain and thunderstorms across Karachi and several districts of Sindh over the coming days.
In addition to Karachi, rainfall with dust storms and thunderstorms is forecast for Tharparkar, Umerkot and Mithi through August 3. Similar weather conditions are also expected in Sanghar, Hyderabad and nearby areas.
The Met Office warned that heavy downpours could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Sukkur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, Badin, Sanghar, Khairpur, Matiari, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Tando Muhammad Khan and Tando Allahyar.
Authorities also cautioned that strong winds, lightning and heavy rainfall could damage vulnerable structures. Farmers have been advised to monitor weather updates closely and plan agricultural activities accordingly to minimize potential losses.
For Karachi, the weather is expected to remain mostly cloudy over the next 24 hours, with the maximum temperature likely to reach around 36 degrees Celsius. During the previous 24 hours, the city’s minimum temperature was recorded at 29.5 degrees Celsius.
