Medical community warns of wider shutdown if suspects in DHQ Kohat killing are not arrested
KARAK: Hospitals across Karak on Tuesday suspended non-emergency services after the killing of Dr Mehwish at the District Headquarters hospital in Kohat, intensifying protests by young doctors who say medical professionals are increasingly unsafe.
The Young Doctors Association in Karak led demonstrations across the district, condemning the provincial government for what it described as a failure to protect healthcare workers. Association representatives said the murder of Dr Mehwish, following the recent killing of Dr Warda, signals a disturbing pattern of targeted violence against doctors.
“Dr Mehwish’s killing is an attack on the entire medical community,” the association said, urging authorities to register the case under Pakistan’s Anti-Terrorism Act and swiftly arrest those responsible.
Protest leaders warned that if their demands are not met, emergency services could also be suspended in affected hospitals. They vowed to continue demonstrations until the perpetrators are brought to justice.
The suspension of routine medical services has disrupted patient care in Karak, reflecting growing frustration within the healthcare sector over repeated attacks and what doctors describe as inadequate security measures for frontline staff.
