Faisal Karim Kundi says intelligence-based operations are necessary to restore peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and stresses that security policy will be directed from Islamabad.

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has said that security policy for the province will be determined in Islamabad rather than Jalalabad, Kandahar or Kabul, stressing that intelligence-based operations are necessary to restore peace.

Speaking at a news conference in Peshawar on Sunday, Kundi said the provincial security situation required intelligence-led operations and that the authorities would take responsibility for carrying them out.

“Policy will now come from Islamabad, not Jalalabad, Kandahar or Kabul,” the governor said, emphasising the federal government’s role in determining the security direction for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The governor addressed the media alongside the adviser on interior and tribal affairs and the provincial home secretary. The news conference focused on the security situation in the province and measures considered necessary to improve law and order.

Kundi said intelligence-based operations would have to be conducted to establish lasting peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He also indicated that the authorities were prepared to accept responsibility for the security measures required to address the situation.

His remarks come amid continuing concerns over security and terrorism in the province, where the federal government has maintained that stronger action is needed to tackle militant threats.

On Oct. 11, 2026, the federal government imposed emergency measures and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) opposed the decision, describing it as unconstitutional.

The federal government’s position was that the PTI-led provincial government had failed to take adequate measures against terrorism. It cited what it described as insufficient action against militant threats as a major reason behind the decision to impose governor’s rule and emergency measures.

The move triggered a political disagreement between the federal government and PTI, with the latter rejecting the constitutional justification for the intervention.

Kundi’s latest statement reinforces the federal government’s position that security policy for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa should be directed from Islamabad. His emphasis on intelligence-based operations also highlights the proposed security approach to addressing terrorism in the province.
