Emergency responders continued searching through the rubble after a house roof collapsed in Lahore’s Harbanspura area, while authorities launched an investigation into the cause of the deadly incident.
LAHORE: At least eight people were killed after the roof of a residential house collapsed in Lahore’s Harbanspura area late Wednesday night, triggering an extensive rescue operation as emergency teams searched for anyone trapped beneath the debris.
Rescue 1122 personnel, supported by the district administration, reached the scene shortly after the incident and began removing rubble using heavy machinery. Officials continued the operation amid concerns that additional victims could still be buried under the collapsed structure.
Lahore Deputy Commissioner Capt (retd) Muhammad Ali Ijaz visited the site to oversee rescue efforts and directed all relevant departments to deploy every available resource to complete the operation swiftly and safely.
Authorities have also ordered an investigation to determine the cause of the roof collapse. Officials said the inquiry would examine whether structural weaknesses, poor construction, or other factors contributed to the deadly incident.
The latest tragedy adds to a series of fatal building collapses in Punjab. Only weeks ago, a roof collapse at a tuition centre in Lahore claimed the lives of 14 children after investigators concluded that excessive weight placed on a damaged roof caused it to fail. Authorities subsequently registered a case against the building owners and contractor.
Earlier this year, four children were killed and around 20 others were injured when the roof of a classroom at a private school in Dera Ghazi Khan collapsed during construction work. An official investigation found that construction materials placed on the roof had exceeded its load-bearing capacity.
