KUALA LUMPUR: Hasmah Mohamad Ali, the wife of former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, has died at the age of 100.
Hasmah, who was a doctor, celebrated her 100th birthday on July 12. Her death has prompted condolences from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar Ibrahim expressed his grief over Hasmah’s death and said her funeral rites would be held with state honors on Monday.
Hasmah was married to Mahathir Mohamad, one of Malaysia’s longest-serving political leaders. Mahathir served as the country’s prime minister for more than 23 years.
The couple had been prominent figures in Malaysia’s public life for decades, with Hasmah known for her medical career and her role alongside Mahathir during his long political career.
