Unidentified attackers opened fire on a senior police officer in South Waziristan, intensifying concerns over rising militant violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
DERA ISMAIL KHAN: A senior police officer was critically injured on Sunday after unidentified assailants opened fire in South Waziristan, marking another violent incident in the restive region.
According to District Police Officer Tahir Shah Wazir, Additional Station House Officer Mirajan Shah sustained severe injuries during the attack in the Madina Mor area. He was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition as emergency efforts were launched to save his life.
Officials said Station House Officer Kamran Khan rushed to the scene and personally participated in the rescue operation, ensuring the injured officer was transported swiftly for medical treatment.
Police have initiated an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack and identify those responsible. Security in the surrounding area has also been heightened amid fears of further violence.
The incident comes just days after a deadly rocket attack in Bannu’s Kangar Jan Bahadur area, where one police constable was martyred and two others were injured after terrorists targeted a police vehicle.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has experienced a sharp rise in militant attacks in recent years, particularly following the withdrawal of United States forces from Afghanistan. Security officials report that militants frequently cross the border to target law enforcement personnel, leading to repeated casualties.
Last month alone, multiple attacks claimed the lives of police officers in Bannu. On April 20, a constable was martyred during a Counter Terrorism Department operation near the Akhundan forest area. Earlier, on April 6, two police personnel and a security guard were killed in separate shootings, including an attack outside a NADRA office in Baka Khel.
Data indicates the province remains the hardest hit by terrorism nationwide. Out of 5,397 incidents reported last year, 3,811 occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, followed by 1,557 in Balochistan. Authorities also reported that 2,597 militants were killed during the same period.
The latest attack underscores persistent security challenges in the region, raising concerns about the safety of law enforcement personnel and the effectiveness of ongoing counterterrorism efforts.
