LAHORE: (Yaseen Hashmi) The International Cricket Council (ICC) is continuing negotiations with Pakistan over its highly anticipated T20 World Cup match against India, with the final decision expected to be made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, officials said.
According to sources, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has concluded initial discussions with the ICC and will seek formal guidance from the federal government before confirming participation in the match. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said the government would make the final call, signaling possible progress after recent talks.
Pakistan had earlier decided not to play against India in the tournament despite agreeing to participate overall, following government directives. However, a four-hour negotiation session held Sunday in Lahore, followed by late-night discussions, has improved prospects for a resolution.
Sources said the PCB has informed ICC officials that only the Pakistani government can authorize participation in the match. ICC Vice Chairman Imran Khawaja, Emirates Cricket Board official Mubashir Usmani, Bangladesh Cricket Board President Aminul Islam, and Sri Lankan cricket authorities attended the talks.
Pakistan has also demanded assurances regarding increased annual revenue as part of the agreement. Meanwhile, the ICC has urged India to avoid actions that undermine the spirit of the game, including disputes over handshake protocols. UAE cricket officials have also encouraged Pakistan to reconsider its position.
