Growing incidents of theft and armed robbery in Peshawar raise alarm over public safety ahead of Eid.
PESHAWAR: A sharp rise in street crimes across Peshawar has left residents gripped by fear, with armed robberies, theft, and pickpocketing incidents increasing ahead of Eid, officials and citizens said.
According to local sources, densely populated التجاري hubs including Hashtnagri, Chowk Yadgar, Karim Pura, Meena Bazaar, Qissa Khwani Bazaar, Khyber Bazaar, Saddar, Shafi Market, and Hayatabad Phase III have witnessed a surge in criminal activity. Pickpockets and thieves are reportedly exploiting large crowds during the final days of Ramadan.
Residents say valuable items such as mobile phones, motorcycles, and cars are increasingly becoming liabilities rather than conveniences. “People are being robbed in broad daylight, and authorities appear unable to control the situation,” a local trader said.
Public concern intensified after a high-profile robbery within the limits of Kotwali Police Station, where armed assailants targeted the son of former SSP Mian Naseeb Jan.
The victim, Mian Saeed Jan, a private bank manager, said two armed motorcyclists intercepted him after he dropped his son at a school bus stop. The suspects allegedly threatened him at gunpoint and fled with cash, a mobile phone, and other valuables.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Citizens are urging Dr. Mian Saeed to initiate a strict crackdown against criminal elements, similar to past operations against land mafias.
The incident has intensified calls for improved security measures as Eid approaches.
