President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlight maritime safety, international standards and modernisation on World Maritime Day.
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening maritime safety, security and regulatory oversight in line with international obligations.
In separate messages issued on World Maritime Day, the president and prime minister paid tribute to Pakistani seafarers and maritime professionals for their contribution to the country’s economy and international trade.
President Zardari highlighted efforts to modernise Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure, particularly the installation of a modern Vessel Traffic Management System at Port Qasim.
He said the system would help improve navigation safety, vessel monitoring, maritime security and operational efficiency.
The president also praised Pakistani seafarers and maritime personnel for continuing to perform their duties under challenging circumstances amid current regional tensions.
He said their dedication and professional commitment had once again brought pride to the country.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif noted that World Maritime Day is being observed this year under the theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence.”
He said Pakistan was taking coordinated measures to strengthen its maritime sector, with particular focus on aligning the country’s maritime industry with international standards and implementing relevant conventions of the International Maritime Organization.
The prime minister said Pakistan, as a responsible maritime nation, remained focused on enhancing maritime safety and security, protecting the marine environment and developing professional capabilities.
He said the measures were aimed at building a modern and resilient maritime sector capable of meeting international standards while supporting Pakistan’s economic and trade interests.
