PTA has conditionally cleared PTML’s proposed rebranding of the merged Ufone-Telenor operation, but legal requirements and the final launch date remain pending.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has conditionally approved the proposed rebranding of the merged Ufone-Telenor mobile operation, clearing a key step toward introducing a new identity for the combined business.
According to sources, the approval remains subject to the completion of all required legal formalities. PTA has directed Pakistan Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML), which operates the merged business, to fulfill the outstanding requirements before proceeding with the proposed brand change.
The exact date of the rebranding has not yet been confirmed. Reports suggesting that a formal launch event could take place on Sept. 15 have not been confirmed by PTA. Sources said the regulator has not received official confirmation of such an event.
The merger of Ufone and Telenor Pakistan has already been completed under PTML, bringing the two companies’ spectrum resources, network infrastructure and customer base under a single mobile operation. The combined business now serves more than 74 million subscribers across Pakistan.
As part of the post-merger strategy, PTML proposed replacing the existing Ufone and Telenor Pakistan brands with the global e& brand. PTML is expected to notify PTA after completing the required legal procedures and before beginning commercial or promotional activities under the proposed new identity.
The proposed rebranding had previously faced delays because of legal and corporate governance concerns surrounding the approval process. The latest conditional approval suggests the process is progressing, although remaining formal requirements must still be completed.
For customers, the impact of the transition will depend on the final plan announced by PTML. The company has not officially confirmed whether the Ufone and Telenor names will be replaced immediately or phased out through a gradual transition.
Although e& remains the proposed identity for the combined operation, PTML has yet to publicly announce the final brand name, official launch date or detailed transition arrangements for Ufone and Telenor customers.
