ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has announced that Pakistan’s long awaited 5G spectrum auction will be held on March 10 with officials indicating the schedule is unlikely to change. The government expects the auction to generate between $300 million and $700 million.
A total of 597 MHz of spectrum will be offered across multiple frequency bands. According to PTA Director General Licensing, Aamir Shahzad three existing telecom operators must acquire at least 100 MHz each. Even a basic allocation without competitive bidding could raise approximately $300 million, while a fully competitive sale could push revenues higher.
The auction will follow a multi round electronic clock format beginning with the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz bands. Following the sale the rollout of 5G services is expected within three to six months subject to infrastructure upgrades.
PTA Chairman Hafeezur Rehman said the auction would enhance service quality and data speeds noting that subscriber growth has outpaced spectrum expansion. Authorities have introduced investment incentives including eliminating right of way fees and allowing operators time for capital investment.
The PTA projects improved broadband speeds, expanded coverage, and stronger network performance nationwide.
