Punjab Ends Orange Line, Metro and Speedo Token System, Old Smart Cards to Be Phased Out

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Punjab Mass Transit Authority is replacing its legacy fare collection system with digital payment options, while passengers raise concerns over the lack of refunds and inadequate public notification.

The Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMTA) has announced the end of the token and legacy smart card system for the Orange Line Metro Train, Metro Bus and Speedo Bus services, marking a significant shift toward digital fare payments across the province.

According to PMTA Incharge Uzair Shah, passengers will now be able to pay fares using the T-Cash Card, a dedicated mobile application, as well as ATM and bank cards. The move is intended to modernize the public transport payment system and provide commuters with more convenient and cashless payment options.

However, the transition has sparked concern among regular passengers. PMTA officials confirmed that any remaining balance on the old smart cards will not be refunded. Instead, commuters who return their old cards at designated stations will receive only the PKR 130 security deposit associated with the card.

Authorities have urged all passengers to submit their old smart cards at the relevant transit stations as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, several commuters have criticized the implementation of the new policy. They claim that despite the official announcement, staff at some stations are still asking passengers to recharge the old smart cards. Others say they were not informed in advance about the policy change, leaving many confused and inconvenienced.

The complaints have raised questions about the rollout of the new payment system and the effectiveness of communication with daily commuters. Many passengers are now calling for clearer guidance and a fair resolution regarding the unused balances remaining on their old cards.
