Lahore authorities move to strengthen passenger safety with mandatory QR panic buttons, cameras, and GPS tracking in ride-hailing vehicles.
In a major step toward urban transport security, authorities in Lahore have approved a sweeping safety upgrade for ride-hailing services aimed at protecting passengers, especially women, during travel.
Under the new plan, all online taxis will be required to install QR-based panic buttons, dashboard cameras, and GPS tracking systems. The measures will be rolled out in phases, with strict deadlines for full compliance across the city’s ride-hailing fleet.
The decision was finalized in a meeting between senior traffic officials and representatives of ride-hailing companies, where both sides agreed to enforce the safety features within a fixed timeframe. Authorities warned that vehicles failing to comply after the deadline will face strict enforcement action through continuous traffic police monitoring.
Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi said the integrated system will significantly enhance passenger safety and allow real-time monitoring of vehicles. He added that the technology will also support accident investigations and improve emergency response times in critical situations.
Officials described the initiative as part of a broader push to modernize urban mobility and build public trust in digital transport services. The system is expected to strengthen accountability while improving overall safety standards for both passengers and drivers in the rapidly expanding ride-hailing sector.
