AMSTERDAM: Goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr made Eredivisie history on Sunday, scoring twice from the penalty spot to help Telstar secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against Cambuur.
The 31-year-old, son of former Netherlands defender and current national team coach Ronald Koeman, became Telstar’s unlikely attacking hero after the hosts were reduced to 10 men in the 22nd minute.
Facing sustained pressure, Telstar relied on Koeman Jr from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute. The goalkeeper showed remarkable composure to convert the opportunity and give his side hope of salvaging a result.
The drama intensified deep into stoppage time.
With Telstar still searching for an equaliser, Koeman Jr was given another chance from the penalty spot in the 11th minute of added time. He again kept his composure, scoring to complete an extraordinary late rescue and secure a 2-2 draw.
The second goal also etched Koeman Jr’s name into the Eredivisie record books. He became the first goalkeeper to score twice in a single Eredivisie match.
The result earned Telstar a valuable point after the team had spent much of the contest playing with 10 men. Koeman Jr’s two penalties transformed what had appeared to be a likely defeat into a memorable draw.
The goalkeeper has previously shown an ability to make an impact from the spot. In May, he also scored a penalty that helped Telstar avoid relegation.
