SPARCO’s latest satellite assessment highlights severe deforestation in Basala and significant forest recovery in Shinkiari, underscoring the impact of human activity and conservation efforts.
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s national space agency, SPARCO, has released new satellite-based findings showing a dramatic contrast in forest cover across two areas of Mansehra district, with Basala suffering extensive forest loss while Shinkiari has witnessed notable ecological recovery.
According to SPARCO’s satellite analysis, Basala has lost 98.5% of its forest cover over the past 24 years. The forested area declined from 8.515 hectares to just 0.131 hectares, making it one of the most significant reductions recorded in the district.
The report attributes the sharp decline primarily to mining activities, which have caused extensive damage to natural forests. SPARCO warned that the destruction has negatively affected local ecosystems, wildlife habitats and the region’s environmental balance.
In contrast, Shinkiari recorded a 45% increase in forest cover during the same period. The satellite assessment found a noticeable improvement in forest density, reflecting the positive impact of environmental conservation and afforestation measures.
SPARCO said the expansion of green cover has strengthened biodiversity, improved watershed protection and enhanced the area’s capacity to absorb carbon, contributing to climate resilience.
