Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed heartfelt condolences following the death of former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar’s brother, sharing an emotional message that reflects the strong bond the two cricket legends have maintained beyond their playing careers.
Ganguly said his relationship with Shoaib Akhtar dates back to their days on the international cricket field and continues today, with the two occasionally meeting in Dubai. He said he was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Shoaib’s brother and extended his prayers to the grieving family.
Recalling a cherished memory from India’s historic 2004 tour of Pakistan, Ganguly said that two days before the ODI in Rawalpindi, Shoaib Akhtar invited the entire Indian team to his home for dinner in his hometown. Ganguly remembered that Shoaib’s elder brother was also present at the gathering, which brought together players from both sides in a rare display of friendship and mutual respect.
The dinner was attended by members of both national teams, including Indian cricket greats Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, highlighting the spirit of sportsmanship that transcended the fierce rivalry between India and Pakistan.
Concluding his message, Ganguly urged his longtime friend to remain strong during this difficult time, saying, “Stay strong, Shoaib. Have courage.”
