WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump is considering a limited initial strike against Iran with the possibility of broader military action in the coming months if Tehran refuses to scale back its nuclear program according to a report by The New York Times.
Citing sources familiar with internal deliberations, the newspaper said President Trump has discussed scenarios with advisers in which diplomatic efforts or a narrowly targeted operation could be followed by a wider campaign. The report suggested that potential objectives might include pressuring Iran’s leadership and curbing its nuclear and missile capabilities.
The developments come as U.S. and Iranian negotiators are expected to meet in Geneva, a meeting described as a critical attempt to avoid military confrontation. While no final decision has been announced officials indicated that military options remain under review.
According to the report possible targets under consideration include facilities linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) nuclear infrastructure, and elements of Iran’s ballistic missile program.
Sources noted that if limited measures fail the administration could keep open the option of expanded action later in the year, potentially aimed at weakening the authority of Ali Khamenei. However debates reportedly continue within the administration over the effectiveness of air power alone.
