Trump said Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held a “very good meeting” with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as Washington and Tehran continued diplomatic contacts.
US and Iranian delegations held a three-hour meeting in New York as Washington and Tehran continued diplomatic efforts amid ongoing conflict and tensions between the two countries.
According to a US official, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Trump confirmed the meeting and described the talks as good, saying it was in Iran’s interest to reach a deal.
“Very good meeting,” Trump said while referring to the talks between Witkoff, Kushner and Iranian mediators. He added that the United States would now assess what progress could be made following the discussions.
The US president also said another meeting had been scheduled in the near future, indicating that diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran could continue.
Iranian media reported that the meeting was held at the request of the United States. The talks were also linked to Iran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that serves as a major route for global energy shipments.
According to Iranian media reports, Tehran has set several conditions for reopening the waterway. These reportedly include an end to the blockade imposed on Iran, the release of Iranian assets and an end to the war on all fronts.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s key energy transit routes, carrying significant volumes of oil and gas shipments. Any prolonged disruption could affect global energy supplies and place additional pressure on international oil and gas markets.
The New York meeting comes as Washington and Tehran continue to explore diplomatic channels despite major differences over the conflict, sanctions and regional security issues.
The talks involving Witkoff, Kushner and Araghchi represent another diplomatic contact between the two sides as efforts continue to determine whether common ground can be found.
