The massive Raytheon contract comes as Germany prepares to acquire Tomahawk missiles and Typhon launchers, potentially strengthening NATO’s long-range strike capabilities.
WASHINGTON: The United States has awarded Raytheon, a unit of RTX, a $22.9 billion contract to expand production of Tomahawk cruise missiles, highlighting Washington’s push to rebuild stocks of long-range precision weapons and strengthen allied military capabilities.
The Pentagon’s decision comes amid heightened demand for advanced weapons following substantial US military assistance to allies and the expenditure of precision-guided munitions during recent conflicts. The increased use of weapons has intensified concerns over the readiness of US inventories, particularly air-defense and long-range strike systems.
Acting US Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao said the agreement would help accelerate ammunition production and ensure that American forces maintain sufficient combat capabilities.
The contract represents a major investment in Tomahawk manufacturing at a time when Washington is seeking to expand its defense-industrial capacity and prepare for potential future security challenges.
Germany Moves Toward Tomahawk Acquisition
The production expansion coincides with a major development in US-German defense cooperation. Washington has approved the sale of Tomahawk cruise missiles and Typhon ground-based launchers to Germany, potentially giving Berlin a significant new long-range strike capability.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said discussions with US officials during the NATO summit were more productive than expected and confirmed that Germany had reached an agreement with Washington to acquire the missile system and eventually deploy it on German territory.
The United States reportedly signed a Letter of Intent with Germany, with formal approval for the sale expected in August. German officials have not disclosed the number of missiles or launchers involved, citing security and operational considerations.
What Tomahawks Could Mean for NATO
The Tomahawk is a long-range cruise missile designed to deliver precision strikes against targets at substantial distances. The system has been used extensively by the US military and is considered an important component of its conventional long-range strike capabilities.
The Typhon system provides a mobile ground-based platform capable of launching long-range precision weapons, offering greater flexibility for deployment and operations.
Germany’s planned acquisition is expected to strengthen its long-range strike capabilities while contributing to NATO’s broader deterrence posture, particularly as European allies seek to reinforce their military readiness.
The deployment of Tomahawk missiles on German territory could also carry wider strategic implications for Europe. It would deepen military cooperation between Washington and Berlin and potentially strengthen NATO’s ability to respond to emerging security challenges.
