The United States booked its place in the FIFA World Cup last 16 with a resilient 2-0 victory over Bosnia in Santa Clara on Wednesday, producing a determined display despite playing much of the second half with 10 men. The win marked the Americans’ first World Cup knockout-stage triumph in 24 years.
Folarin Balogun broke the deadlock just before halftime after capitalizing on a loose ball, scoring his third goal of the tournament. However, the striker’s evening changed dramatically early in the second half when he received a red card following a challenge on Tarik Muharemovic. Despite the setback, the hosts defended brilliantly before Malik Tillman sealed the result with a late free-kick.
The victory also snapped the United States’ 10-match losing streak against European opposition and earned a round-of-16 clash with Belgium in Seattle. Belgium secured their place after coming from two goals down to defeat Senegal 3-2 in extra time.
Captain Christian Pulisic praised his teammates’ resilience, saying the squad showed remarkable determination after the dismissal. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino defended Balogun, describing the challenge as accidental and hailing his players for their fighting spirit.
