Wasim Akram and Shaniera Akram explained why they chose not to undertake the recent Hajj pilgrimage together.
KARACHI: Former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram has explained why his wife, Shaniera Akram, did not accompany him during his recent Hajj pilgrimage, saying the decision was intended to allow him to focus fully on the spiritually significant journey.
Wasim and Shaniera discussed the matter during a recent podcast hosted by journalist Maliha Rehman, where they spoke about their family life and the former cricketer’s Hajj experience.
Addressing questions he had received on social media about Shaniera’s absence, Wasim said he believed Umrah would be a more suitable first experience for her before she eventually performs Hajj.
He explained that Shaniera could first undertake Umrah to become familiar with the experience and understand the religious practices associated with the pilgrimage. He added that the couple hoped to perform Hajj together in the future.
Shaniera also explained her decision, saying she did not want Wasim to become distracted while concentrating on his pilgrimage.
She said Hajj was an important personal and spiritual experience for Wasim and that she wanted his attention to remain focused on the journey rather than on concerns about her.
Shaniera stressed that her decision did not mean she would never perform Hajj with her husband. Instead, she expressed hope that they would undertake the pilgrimage together at another time, God willing.
She described the journey as Wasim’s own spiritual experience and said she wanted him to fully experience and appreciate it.
Wasim spoke positively about the pilgrimage, describing it as an extraordinary and memorable period in his life. He also revealed that Hajj coincided with his birthday, making the experience even more meaningful for him. He described the pilgrimage as a special birthday gift and reflected on it with gratitude.
The couple’s comments have drawn attention from fans, particularly because Shaniera, who was born in Australia, has developed a strong connection with Pakistan since marrying Wasim in 2013.
Shaniera is also known for her involvement in social causes and her public support for Pakistan, earning a significant following among Pakistanis on social media.
Wasim and Shaniera have been married since August 2013 and have a daughter, Ayla. The couple has regularly shared glimpses of their family life while generally keeping their personal affairs private.
