Court restores interim bail, directs accused to approach trial court for further proceedings
The Islamabad High Court has granted significant relief to Dr. Fazeela Abbasi by restoring her interim bail in a high-profile money laundering case involving billions of rupees.
The hearing was conducted under the supervision of Justice Muhammad Azam Khan, who approved the restoration of bail against surety bonds worth Rs100,000. The court also directed the petitioner to approach the relevant trial court for further legal proceedings.
Court Proceedings and Allegations
During the hearing, Dr. Abbasi appeared alongside her counsel Naeem Bukhari, who argued that his client had consistently respected the law and appeared before the court on three occasions. He maintained that her absence from one hearing was justified due to medical reasons, supported by a three-day medical certificate, yet her bail was previously revoked by the trial court.
The case was registered by the Federal Investigation Agency, which alleges suspicious financial activity linked to Dr. Abbasi. According to the agency, approximately Rs25 billion in turnover was recorded across 22 bank accounts associated with her, while her declared annual income ranged between Rs400,000 and Rs600,000.
Authorities claim the discrepancy indicates potential money laundering, with further investigations underway. The court, after hearing arguments from both sides, reinstated her interim bail while emphasizing that she must present her defense before the trial court.
The case is expected to intensify in the coming days as investigators continue efforts to reach a conclusive outcome in the multi-billion-rupee probe.
