Pakistan Flight Disruptions Trigger Surge in Airline Ticket Scam Targeting Travelers

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Scammers exploit flight disruptions and fake airline offers to hack devices and steal money from unsuspecting travelers.

ISLAMABAD: A growing cyber fraud scheme targeting air travelers in Pakistan has emerged amid ongoing disruptions in international flight schedules, particularly linked to tensions in the Middle East.

A resident of Islamabad, identified as Aamna Umar (assumed name), became a victim after receiving a WhatsApp message from a number displaying the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) logo. The message offered a special discounted international ticket along with a downloadable file. Upon opening the file, her mobile device was compromised, allowing hackers to gain control and withdraw over Rs7,000 from her Easypaisa account.

Experts warn that such scams are increasing as travelers struggle to secure tickets. Fraudsters are impersonating airlines especially PIA by sending fake promotional messages claiming exclusive discounts or selection for special offers.

A PIA spokesperson clarified that the airline does not provide offers or request personal information via unsolicited messages or calls, urging passengers to rely only on official platforms.

Cybersecurity expert Muhammad Asad Rehman explained that attackers often trick users into installing malicious APK files disguised as applications. Once installed, these files grant hackers full access to the victim’s phone, including sensitive data, financial apps, and personal information.

Authorities advise travelers to avoid downloading unknown files or clicking suspicious links and to purchase tickets only through verified airline channels to prevent financial and data loss.
