Authorities issue urgent coastal evacuations after a powerful offshore earthquake triggers tsunami concerns across Southeast Asia.
A powerful offshore earthquake struck the Molucca Sea region of Indonesia, causing widespread alarm across the region on Thursday. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake measured 7.8 in magnitude and occurred at a shallow depth of around 10 kilometers, increasing the risk of strong surface impact and potential tsunami formation.
Tsunami Alert and Affected Areas
Following the quake, tsunami warnings were issued for coastal zones within a 1,000-kilometer radius of the epicenter. Authorities warned that dangerous waves could impact parts of Indonesia as well as neighboring Philippines and Malaysia. Unusual sea-level changes were reported, prompting immediate evacuation orders for low-lying coastal communities.
Safety Measures and Current Situation
Local disaster agencies activated emergency sirens across nearby islands and placed rescue teams on high alert. Fishermen and boats at sea were instructed to return to shore immediately. Officials said the next several hours remain critical due to possible aftershocks that could further destabilize sea conditions and intensify tsunami risks.
