Security operations intensify across Pakistan’s capital and Rawalpindi as authorities implement large-scale traffic restrictions, hotel evacuations, and heightened deployments amid reports of upcoming high-level diplomatic engagements.
ISLAMABAD: Evacuation and clearance operations have begun at Islamabad’s Serena Hotel and Marriott Hotel as security arrangements intensify ahead of reported high-level diplomatic activity expected in the capital next week, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.
Officials and sources indicated that foreign delegations are anticipated to begin arriving in Islamabad, prompting enhanced security measures across sensitive locations. While official confirmation regarding the nature of the meetings has not been fully disclosed, the preparations have been widely interpreted as linked to significant diplomatic engagements, including speculation around US-Iran discussions.
Security agencies have deployed personnel across key installations, with additional forces stationed on rooftops and strategic points in and around the capital. Surveillance and monitoring have been increased in coordination with ground units, while sensitive movement corridors remain under strict observation.
Authorities have also imposed sweeping traffic restrictions across Islamabad. The Red Zone and Extended Red Zone have been completely sealed off for all traffic. The Islamabad Expressway section from Koral Interchange to Zero Point has been closed, while intermittent suspensions are being enforced on Srinagar Highway due to security protocols.
Heavy traffic entry into the federal capital has been suspended from all major entry points. Officials have advised commuters and transport operators to avoid Islamabad during the ongoing security arrangements to minimize disruption.
A detailed alternative traffic plan has been issued for residents of sectors including G-5, G-6, G-7, F-6, and F-7, directing movement through 9th Avenue and Margalla Road toward Rawalpindi. Additional diversions have been placed at key junctions including Faisal Avenue, Koral Chowk, and Club Road to manage flow during closures.
In Rawalpindi, law enforcement agencies have deployed more than 10,000 personnel under a comprehensive security plan. Over 600 checkpoints have been established at entry and exit points across the city, supported by elite commandos, sharpshooters, Punjab Highway Patrol units, and Dolphin Force contingents.
Officials said deployment began shortly after midnight on April 18, with security personnel working in rotating shifts to maintain round-the-clock vigilance. Rooftop sharpshooters have been integrated into a coordinated communication network with ground teams using wireless systems.
Special Branch units are conducting search, sweep, and combing operations across multiple sensitive areas, while Safe City surveillance cameras are being actively used for real-time monitoring from centralized control rooms.
Key arterial routes, including sections between Chohan Chowk and Koral Chowk, remain closed, with authorities emphasizing that all measures are precautionary and aimed at ensuring security for visiting delegations and public safety.
Traffic authorities continue to urge citizens to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel near restricted zones as the situation develops.
