Punjab authorities have finalized a province-wide Muharram security strategy featuring advanced surveillance, strict regulation of religious gatherings, and a zero-tolerance policy against sectarianism and hate speech.
LAHORE: The Punjab Home Department has finalized an extensive security and administrative plan for Muharram-ul-Haram, introducing enhanced surveillance measures and strict law enforcement protocols to ensure peace and public safety across the province.
According to official sources, only licensed processions and officially approved majalis will be allowed during Muharram. Organizers have been directed to strictly follow designated routes and approved schedules, with authorities aiming to prevent any disruptions or security breaches.
The security framework includes mandatory CCTV camera installations, walk-through gates, metal detectors, and comprehensive audio-video recording of religious gatherings. Authorities will also increase monitoring along procession routes, sensitive installations, commercial centers, transport hubs, hotels, and guest houses.
To strengthen security further, Punjab plans to utilize drone surveillance in border and riverine regions. Signal jammers and sniper deployment may also be considered at highly sensitive locations based on threat assessments.
The Home Department has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward sectarianism, hate speech, and extremist propaganda. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to strictly enforce the Loudspeaker Act and prevent the public display of weapons during Muharram events.
Cyber monitoring teams will remain active to track and counter inflammatory content circulating on social media platforms. Emergency response services, including hospitals, Rescue 1122, bomb disposal units, and fire brigades, have also been placed on high alert.
Authorities have additionally directed local administrations to work closely with peace committees and religious scholars to promote unity, tolerance, and religious harmony throughout the sacred month.
