A routine Pakistan Air Force training mission ended in tragedy near Mardan after a trainer aircraft crashed, claiming the lives of two military pilots and prompting an official investigation.
A tragic aviation accident struck Pakistan’s armed forces on Sunday when a Pakistan Air Force (PAF) trainer aircraft crashed near Mardan during a routine training sortie, resulting in the martyrdom of two pilots.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the deceased were identified as Flight Lieutenant Muhammad Qasim Abdullah of the Pakistan Air Force and Lieutenant Taha Abbasi of the Pakistan Navy. The aircraft was engaged in a routine training mission when the accident occurred.
Following the crash, Air Headquarters constituted a board of inquiry to determine the circumstances and cause of the incident. Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding the aircraft or factors that may have contributed to the crash.
The loss has prompted an outpouring of grief from the country’s civilian and military leadership. Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, along with the services chiefs and all ranks of the Pakistan Armed Forces, expressed profound sorrow and extended condolences to the families of the fallen officers.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the incident as deeply tragic and paid tribute to the professionalism, dedication, and sacrifice of Pakistan’s armed forces. He prayed for the elevation of the martyrs’ ranks and assured their families of the government’s support.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also expressed grief over the loss, calling the pilots’ sacrifice a great honour earned in the line of duty. He additionally prayed for the recovery of three individuals reported injured in the accident.
