Pakistan has stepped up its monsoon preparedness as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed federal and provincial authorities to strengthen coordination and ensure swift emergency response measures amid forecasts of heavy rainfall across the country.
Chairing a meeting with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik in Islamabad on Wednesday, the prime minister reviewed Pakistan’s disaster management strategy and received a detailed briefing on ongoing efforts to reduce the impact of the monsoon season.
Officials informed the meeting that the national early warning system has been activated and that the NDMA is working closely with the Ministry of Climate Change to improve disaster preparedness. Shehbaz Sharif stressed that seamless coordination between provincial governments and disaster management authorities is essential for an effective response to any emergency.
Earlier, the prime minister ordered the formation of a federal emergency response committee and directed the climate change minister and NDMA chairman to visit all provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan to evaluate local preparedness.
