Pakistan’s federal cabinet has approved the Defence Forces Act 2026 and amendments to the National Command Authority Act 2010, paving the way for parliamentary consideration.
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s federal cabinet on Thursday approved the draft Defence Forces Act 2026 and amendments to the National Command Authority Act 2010, marking a significant legislative step following the country’s 27th Constitutional Amendment.
The cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad, focused on legal and administrative measures linked to the recent constitutional changes.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Defence Forces Act 2026 has been prepared as part of the follow-up process to amendments introduced through the 27th Constitutional Amendment. The proposed legislation is aimed at defining administrative matters concerning the office of the Chief of Defence Forces and the Chief of Defence Forces Headquarters.
Following cabinet approval, the draft Defence Forces Act 2026 will be presented before Parliament for consideration and approval during its ongoing session.
The cabinet also approved amendments to the National Command Authority Act 2010, describing the changes as a necessary legislative measure following the 27th Constitutional Amendment.
The amended draft of the National Command Authority Act will also be submitted to Parliament for approval.
The decisions place both pieces of legislation at the parliamentary stage, where lawmakers will determine their final legal status. The move is expected to provide the legislative framework for administrative arrangements arising from the recent constitutional changes.
