ChatGPT, Grok and Claude Hit by Outages Within Hours, Disrupting Millions of AI Users

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

ChatGPT, Grok and Claude experienced service disruptions on Thursday, affecting several AI features before the issues were resolved or mitigated.

Three of the world’s major AI chatbots — OpenAI’s ChatGPT, xAI’s Grok and Anthropic’s Claude — experienced service disruptions around the same time on Thursday, affecting users across several platforms.

ChatGPT began reporting problems at about 11 a.m. ET, with OpenAI’s status page reporting elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex. The disruption affected more than basic conversations, with users also reporting problems with logins, file uploads, voice mode, search, deep research and image generation.

OpenAI said it had “applied a mitigation” and was monitoring recovery, although some AI tools continued to experience degraded performance.

The disruption came as OpenAI was teasing the launch of Astra, its new AI model.

Anthropic’s Claude chatbot, Claude Code and Claude API also experienced an outage around the same period. Anthropic technical staff member CJ Avilla attributed the partial disruption to an “infrastructure issue.”

Anthropic later said the problem had been resolved at about 12:15 p.m. ET.

Grok, meanwhile, began experiencing problems earlier, at around 9:30 a.m. ET, affecting its Android, iOS and web services. Users attempting to interact with Grok through X were shown a message stating that the model was overloaded and asking them to try again later or select another model.

xAI subsequently resolved the issue.

It remains unclear whether the three outages were connected or simply occurred independently. The simultaneous disruptions highlighted the growing reliance on major AI platforms for communication, coding, research, search and other digital tasks.

The Verge reported that it had contacted OpenAI, xAI and Anthropic for comment but had not immediately received responses.
