Malaysian football legend Datuk Abah Alf has reportedly married a woman believed to be around 20 years old, with photographs from the wedding drawing widespread attention on social media.
Abah Alf, 72, reportedly married on Aug. 27, according to foreign media reports. The marriage was confirmed by his younger brother, Datuk Younes Alf, who is also a former Malaysian national footballer and coach.
According to the reports, Abah Alf’s wife is approximately 50 years younger than him. Images from the wedding have circulated widely on social media, prompting a range of reactions from users because of the couple’s significant age difference.
Datuk Younes Alf said the marriage took place with the consent of both families. He expressed good wishes for his brother and his wife and said the family hopes the couple will remain happy in their married life.
He also indicated that Abah Alf may currently be on honeymoon with his wife and therefore was not available by phone. He nevertheless confirmed that the marriage had taken place and said the family was happy with the new relationship.
The wedding photographs have since been shared across various social media platforms, where users have offered different opinions about the marriage. The attention has largely focused on the reported age difference between the couple.
Abah Alf is regarded as one of the notable figures in Malaysian football. He represented Malaysia during his playing career and was part of an important period for the country’s national team in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The former footballer was also part of the Malaysian side that defeated South Korea 2-1 in a decisive qualifying match to secure qualification for the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
The qualification was considered a significant achievement for Malaysian football. However, Abah Alf and his teammates ultimately did not compete at the Games.
Malaysia decided to boycott the 1980 Moscow Olympics in protest against the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. As a result, the Malaysian players were unable to fulfill their opportunity to compete in the Olympics.
