Prince William and Princess Kate face calls for better diplomatic preparation ahead of their expected India visit, following criticism of their 2022 Caribbean tour.
Prince William and Princess Kate have been urged to prepare carefully for their upcoming international engagements as they prepare for an expected visit to India later this month to attend the Earthshot Prize, amid renewed scrutiny of their previous overseas tour of the Caribbean.
The anticipated visit will mark an important international appearance for the royal couple, who have not undertaken a joint international tour for several years. Royal commentators have suggested that their previous experiences, particularly the controversy surrounding their 2022 Caribbean tour, should inform their approach to future diplomatic engagements.
The discussion comes shortly after King Charles completed a nine-day tour of the Caribbean, highlighting the continuing diplomatic significance of royal visits and the sensitivities surrounding Britain’s historical relationships with former colonies.
Royal editor Russell Myers addressed the issue during an episode of the Mirror’s Pod Save the King podcast. Discussing William and Kate’s future responsibilities as the monarchy’s senior representatives, Myers suggested that their previous Caribbean experience should serve as an important lesson.
He recalled that the couple had not returned to the region since their 2022 visit, which attracted criticism over several incidents during the tour. According to Myers, the experience proved challenging for the couple and their supporting team.
One widely discussed incident involved photographs showing William and Kate greeting children through a wire fence. Their appearance in an open-top Land Rover, a vehicle previously used by Queen Elizabeth II, also attracted public attention and criticism.
Myers indicated that royal visits to countries with complicated historical relationships with Britain require more than traditional ceremonial arrangements. He emphasised the importance of cultural awareness, careful planning and an understanding of local political and social concerns.
He also suggested that preparation should involve the entire royal team, including advisers and supporting staff, rather than focusing solely on the royal couple.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as William and Kate were then known, undertook their eight-day Caribbean tour in March 2022. The visit covered Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas and formed part of celebrations marking Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.
It was their first major overseas tour together since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the trip became overshadowed by demonstrations and criticism connected to Britain’s colonial history.
Protesters in several locations called for an official apology and reparations for slavery. The demonstrations also brought renewed attention to historical injustices and discussions about the future relationship between Caribbean nations and the British monarchy.
Myers suggested that any future return to the Caribbean, whether in their current positions or eventually as King and Queen, would require a more thoughtful approach that acknowledges the region’s history and concerns.
As William and Kate prepare for their expected India visit, their handling of international engagements is likely to attract attention. Their appearance at the Earthshot Prize will provide another opportunity to represent the British royal family internationally.
The experience of previous tours has underlined the importance of cultural understanding, diplomatic sensitivity and thorough preparation in shaping the monarchy’s international relationships.
