Elon Musk says he plans to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States in 2027, but eligibility and distribution details remain unclear.
Elon Musk has announced plans to give one share of SpaceX to every child in the United States in 2027, a proposed giveaway that could cover approximately 72 million children and carry an estimated value of $10.5 billion at reported share prices.
The billionaire entrepreneur announced the plan in a post on X on Oct. 19, saying he intended to distribute shares from his personal holdings. The pledge has been reported by Forbes and other news organizations, but Musk has not disclosed how the proposed distribution would work.
“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America,” Musk wrote. He added, “This will be the first of many.”
The announcement has drawn attention because of the potential scale of the proposed transfer. However, it remains a future commitment rather than a completed giveaway or an established distribution program.
SpaceX giveaway could be worth $10.5 billion
The proposed initiative could involve approximately 72 million children, based on estimates of the US population under 18. At a reported SpaceX share price of $146.03 at the close of trading on Oct. 16, distributing one share to each child would represent a total market value of more than $10.5 billion.
The final value could change with the share price at the time of distribution. The estimated total also depends on how Musk defines eligible children and whether the plan covers all US residents under 18 or a narrower group.
Musk has not announced an exact distribution date, an age cutoff or a process for verifying beneficiaries. Details about parental consent, custodial accounts and the transfer of shares to minors have also not been disclosed.
These unanswered questions mean the financial estimate should not be interpreted as a confirmed amount already distributed or a finalized program budget.
Questions remain over eligibility and distribution
The proposal would require a process to identify millions of potential recipients and determine how the shares could legally be transferred to children. Any restrictions on transferring shares, along with the arrangements for minors to hold them, could affect how the plan is implemented.
Musk’s announcement followed his criticism of Anthropic’s proposal to allocate 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund. He argued that shares should instead be distributed directly to the public.
His statement that the giveaway would be the “first of many” did not include details of any additional initiatives.
For now, the proposed SpaceX share distribution remains a pledge announced by Musk. Its eventual scope, eligibility requirements, delivery method and completion timeline will depend on details that have yet to be made public.
