Oslo: Marius Borg Hoiby 29 the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette Marit, pleaded not guilty to multiple rape and domestic violence charges on the first day of his trial on Tuesday while admitting to some lesser offences.
Hoiby faces 38 criminal charges including four counts of rape and one count of domestic violence. He also entered partial guilty pleas to aggravated assault reckless behaviour offensive sexual behaviour speeding and driving without a valid licence.The trial, held at Oslo District Court, comes amid intense media scrutiny and declining public support for Norway’s monarchy.
Lead prosecutor Sturla Henriksboe stated that Hoiby would receive no special treatment despite his royal connections. Hoiby’s lawyer Ellen Holager Andenaes argued that the defendant had been unfairly treated due to extensive press coverage and books written about him.
Crown Prince Haakon confirmed he and his wife would not attend the proceedings while emphasizing family support for Hoiby and sympathy for the alleged victims.
The case marks a major crisis for Norway’s royal family, which has faced recent health issues and public controversies. Hoiby, who holds no royal title and is outside the line of succession, also faces charges related to drug possession and past assault allegations.
