Islamabad: The Federal Shariat Court of Pakistan has concluded the Arshad Sharif murder case and issued its decision. Justice Umar Farooq, who authored the verdict, stated that Pakistan and Kenya have already signed a Mutual Legal Assistance agreement, and there is currently no need for further judicial intervention.
The written verdict noted that all related petitions and the suo motu case have been resolved. While acknowledging the grief of the journalistic community and the Pakistani public over Arshad Sharif’s killing, the court said both governments are taking appropriate measures. The court also emphasized that the heirs of the victim may approach relevant courts regarding any pending matters.
Regarding international forums, the court stated that it is the government’s discretion and falls under Pakistan’s foreign policy. The Federal Shariat Court also observed that no party has raised objections to the investigation carried out by the Special Joint Investigation Team (JIT). Arrest warrants have been issued for the accused to face trial in Pakistan.
The court clarified that the pace of investigations depends on diplomatic coordination with Kenya and compliance with international law. Arshad Sharif was shot dead on October 23, 2022, on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Kenya.
