An Iranian court has sentenced Nobel Peace Prize winning activist Narges Mohammadi to six years in prison, according to international news agencies. Her lawyer said the charges include assembly and facilitation of crimes resulting in the six year sentence along with a two year ban on leaving the country.
Additionally Mohammadi received 1.5 years in prison on propaganda charges and was ordered into two years of internal exile in the eastern city of Khusf South Khorasan province. Under Iranian law multiple sentences are often enforced simultaneously.
Her lawyer expressed hope that, given her deteriorating health, she could be temporarily released on bail for medical treatment.
The 53 year old human rights defender has spent over 25 years campaigning against the death penalty and criticizing Iran’s mandatory hijab law for women repeatedly facing imprisonment. Her advocacy has led to numerous legal cases and jail terms over the years.
In recognition of her efforts against capital punishment Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 while she was still behind bars. Due to her imprisonment, her children accepted the prestigious award on her behalf. Mohammadi remains a symbol of resistance for women’s rights and human rights in Iran.
