Punjab Launches First Electric Taxi Scheme in Lahore

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday inaugurated the province’s first electric taxi scheme at a ceremony held in Lahore. Senior government officials and transport authorities attended the launch marking a significant development in Punjab’s push toward cleaner urban mobility.

Speaking at the event the chief minister described the initiative as part of the government’s broader strategy to build a comprehensive e-mobility ecosystem. She termed the project a transformative step aimed at modernising public transport while addressing environmental challenges.

Under the first phase 1,100 electric taxis will be distributed at subsidised rates. The provincial government has allocated a subsidy of up to Rs4 billion to support the programme. Maryam Nawaz said the scheme is designed to help reduce air pollution and create employment opportunities for numerous families across the province.

Highlighting inclusivity she announced that 30 percent of the vehicles have been reserved for women. To improve affordability applicants must pay a 30 percent down payment of which the government will cover 15 percent. For women beneficiaries financial assistance is higher with the government bearing 60 percent of the down payment.

Officials stated that the electric taxis are expected to begin operations within 48 hours, initially in Lahore, with gradual expansion planned across other districts.
