Amid escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan several regional and international powers have stepped in to encourage de-escalation and dialogue. Turkey and Qatar have actively contacted officials from both sides in an effort to mediate the dispute.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held separate telephone conversations with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. He also discussed the matter with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to explore possible diplomatic solutions.
Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs also engaged both Pakistani and Afghan foreign ministers separately. Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi offered to play a sincere mediatory role between the two countries.
China expressed deep concern over the situation, urging both sides to resolve the issue promptly through dialogue. Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty also spoke with Ishaq Dar to discuss possible solutions, while Russia voiced concern. No clear statement has emerged from the United States so far.
Pakistan’s Foreign Office reiterated that any further provocation by the Taliban regime or terrorist groups would receive a strong response.
