Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has accused Afghanistan of consistently supporting terrorism and warned that further trust in the Afghan government could pose a serious risk to Pakistan.
In a special interview with Geo News, Asif stated that Pakistan had made sincere efforts to resolve issues with Afghanistan through dialogue. However, he emphasized that relying on the Afghan government any longer would not be wise. According to him, the behavior and policies of the authorities in Kabul have repeatedly proven unreliable and unacceptable.
The defense minister alleged that Afghanistan has historically provided support to terrorist groups operating against Pakistan. He specifically referred to the banned militant organization Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claiming that it functions as a “franchise” operating from Afghan territory. Asif said that without support from Afghanistan, the group would have been eliminated long ago.
He further warned that trusting the current Afghan administration could create significant security threats for Pakistan.
Speaking about the broader regional situation, Asif also mentioned the global impact of rising petroleum prices. He described Iran as a brotherly country and noted that Pakistan maintains strong ties with other Islamic nations as well. He expressed hope that the ongoing regional tensions would remain temporary and that a peaceful solution to the conflict would soon emerge.
