The United States is reportedly reviewing the possibility of sending special forces to secure Iran’s nuclear material, according to a report by the news website Axios.
The report claims that officials from the United States and Israel have discussed potential options to secure highly enriched uranium stored in Iran. The discussions reportedly focus on preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
According to the report, one of the war objectives announced by Donald Trump is to ensure that Iran never obtains nuclear weapons. Analysts believe Iran currently possesses around 450 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity, which could potentially be further enriched to weapons-grade levels within weeks.
A possible operation to seize the material would require American or Israeli forces to enter Iranian territory and access heavily fortified underground facilities. However, it remains unclear whether such a mission would be conducted by the United States, Israel, or through a joint operation.
During a congressional briefing U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said securing the uranium would require physically going to the location, though he did not specify who would carry out the operation.
Officials are also reportedly discussing other options including removing the uranium from Iran or reducing its enrichment level on site.
