Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced sweeping austerity measures across Pakistan amid heightened tensions in the Middle East domestic security concerns, and surging global oil prices.

In his address to the nation on Monday, the premier described the Middle East as engulfed in a severe warlike situation and warned that threats to peace posed significant risks for the country.

Under the new measures, fuel supply for government vehicles will be cut by 50 percent for the next two months, with 60 percent of official vehicles grounded. Cabinet ministers will forgo salaries for two months, while members of parliament will face a 25 percent pay reduction.

All foreign trips by ministers governors and provincial chief ministers have been suspended, and government banquets official dinners and Iftar events are fully canceled. Purchases of vehicles, furniture, and air conditioners by government departments are banned.

Additionally 50 percent of federal staff will work from home, with only essential personnel reporting to offices and government offices will operate four days a week. All universities and higher education institutions will switch to online classes from March 10, while schools will observe a two week holiday starting next week. Seminars and official events will now be held in government facilities to reduce expenses.
