The AJK Supreme Court has suspended a high court ruling that restored PTI’s registration, leaving the party’s legal status and election symbol uncertain ahead of the upcoming legislative assembly elections.
Muzaffarabad: The electoral prospects of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Azad Jammu and Kashmir have been thrown into uncertainty after the AJK Supreme Court suspended a high court ruling that had reinstated the party’s regional registration just days before the legislative assembly elections.
The AJK Supreme Court stayed the June 23 judgment of the AJK High Court, which had restored PTI’s registration and allowed its candidates to contest under the party’s iconic “bat” election symbol. The decision came after the Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir challenged the ruling, arguing that the high court exceeded its jurisdiction by granting relief beyond the scope of the original petition.
During Monday’s proceedings, Raja Saeed Akram Khan constituted a full bench to hear the appeal and scheduled the next hearing for July 2.
The earlier high court verdict, delivered by a larger bench led by Shahid Bahar, had overturned the election commission’s decision to cancel PTI’s registration over alleged financial irregularities and non-compliance with internal party election rules. The petition had been filed by senior PTI leader and former AJK Prime Minister Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi.
