Asma Abbas and retired Colonel Ghulam Abbas’ discussion of their marriage has triggered an online debate over second marriages and the emotions of first wives.
Pakistani actress Asma Abbas has faced criticism on social media after her husband, retired Colonel Ghulam Abbas, discussed their marriage and his relationship with his first wife during a television appearance.
Asma Abbas, known for dramas including Ranjha Ranjha Kardi, Khumaar, Akbari Asghari, GT Road, Baby Baji Ki Bahuwain and Radd, appeared on Wasi Shah’s show Zabardast alongside her husband.
During the conversation, Ghulam Abbas recalled the circumstances following his marriage to Asma. He said his first wife initially moved to the United States after his second marriage. According to him, she wanted to visit her sister in America, and he helped arrange her visa. She reportedly left their child in Pakistan and returned about six months later.
He said that after her return, his first wife continued to have an important place in the household. He recalled that the bedroom remained hers while he moved to Quetta for work because of his posting.
Ghulam Abbas also expressed gratitude toward both women, saying they supported him through difficult periods of his career and made his life easier. He credited his first wife with accepting the circumstances and said she and Asma eventually developed a close friendship.
According to him, the two women would sometimes join forces during disagreements with him, turning what could have been a difficult relationship into an unexpected friendship.
Asma Abbas has previously spoken openly about her relationship with Ghulam Abbas. She has said that he fell in love with her and wanted to have children with her, which eventually led to their marriage. She has also maintained that she shared a good relationship with his first wife and lived peacefully with her until her death.
However, the latest discussion drew criticism from several social media users. Some argued that the conversation appeared to overlook the emotional impact a second marriage could have on a first wife.
One commenter accused the couple of glorifying the second marriage and questioned why a married man would be pursued. Another called Asma a “homewrecker” and argued that the first wife ultimately had to bear the consequences.
Other users questioned aspects of the narrative surrounding the first wife, including claims about her family life and children. Some also criticized the decision to discuss the circumstances of the marriage publicly in what they viewed as a celebratory manner.
