MADRID: Bayern Munich secured an impressive 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, with teenage forward Lennart Karl and Austrian midfielder Konrad Laimer scoring to deliver three valuable points for the German champions at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Despite missing several key players and head coach Vincent Kompany, Bayern demonstrated their squad depth and resilience to overcome Diego Simeone’s side on their home ground.

Bayern travelled to Madrid without influential players Jamal Musiala, Luis Diaz, Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari. Their preparations were further complicated by Kompany’s absence due to a meningitis-related illness.

However, captain Joshua Kimmich and striker Harry Kane helped guide the visitors through a challenging encounter, while teenage sensation Karl emerged as one of the standout performers.

Atletico initially looked dangerous, with Julian Alvarez narrowly missing the target just three minutes into the match. Kane also had an opportunity to break the deadlock midway through the first half but sent his attempt wide.

Bayern eventually took the lead after Atletico defender Robin Le Normand hesitated in possession. Karl capitalised on the mistake, won the ball and calmly lifted his finish over goalkeeper Jan Oblak to give the visitors the advantage.

Atletico manager Simeone responded by introducing three substitutes in an attempt to change the momentum. However, Bayern quickly extended their lead.

Kane delivered an intelligent pass into Laimer’s path, allowing the Austrian midfielder to unleash a powerful effort that struck the crossbar before finding the back of the net.

Bayern appeared to have scored a third when Dayot Upamecano headed home with 10 minutes remaining, but the goal was disallowed for an attacking foul.

Despite having limited options available from the bench, Bayern controlled the closing stages and prevented Atletico from producing a comeback.

Laimer, who was named UEFA’s Man of the Match, said Bayern had demonstrated the quality and confidence within their squad despite the difficult circumstances.

Atletico midfielder Marcos Llorente, meanwhile, admitted that Karl’s opening goal had stunned the home side.

The victory moved Bayern into eighth place in the 36-team Champions League standings, having recorded two wins and two draws. Atletico finished the night in 22nd position.

Kane also missed the opportunity to equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of scoring in 11 consecutive Champions League matches. However, Bayern’s collective performance ensured that the individual milestone took a back seat to an important European victory.
