Elon Musk’s estimated $445 million to $474 million political spending during the 2026 US midterm election cycle coincided with a $113 billion decline in his net worth over two trading days.
Elon Musk’s estimated $445 million to $474 million in political contributions supporting Republican candidates and aligned groups during the 2026 US midterm elections was followed by a reported $113 billion decline in his net worth over two trading days, as falling valuations of Tesla and SpaceX shares affected his personal fortune.
According to reports published by The Associated Press, Fortune and other international media outlets, Musk was among the biggest individual political donors in the November 2026 election cycle. His contributions were directed toward Republican candidates, political action committees and other groups seeking to maintain Republican control of Congress.
The elections, held on Nov. 3, delivered major setbacks for Republicans, with Democrats winning control of both chambers of Congress and securing victories in several important state-level contests.
Where did Musk’s political money go?
An investigation by The New York Times, cited by Quartz, estimated Musk’s total political contributions at approximately $474 million since Jan. 1, 2025.
The breakdown included approximately $216 million for America PAC, Musk’s own super political action committee, and $168 million for the Senate Leadership Fund, which supports Republican Senate candidates.
Another $30 million went to the Congressional Leadership Fund, while approximately $44 million supported other Republican groups or federal candidates. An additional $16 million was directed toward state-level political efforts in Michigan, Texas and Wisconsin.
The Associated Press separately reported that Musk spent at least $445 million attempting to help Republicans retain control of Congress.
The figures differ because of reporting periods, campaign finance disclosures and the methods used to calculate political contributions.
Although Musk’s contributions placed him among the largest political donors in modern US election history, the claim that he broke the absolute single-cycle spending record requires qualification. According to the New York Times-based figures reported by Quartz, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg spent more during the 2020 election cycle.
$113 billion decline in estimated wealth
The financial developments following the elections also attracted significant attention.
According to Fortune’s Nov. 6 report, Musk’s estimated wealth declined by approximately $33.5 billion on Wednesday, followed by another $79.7 billion on Thursday.
The combined reduction reached approximately $113 billion over two trading days, through the market close on Nov. 5, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Tesla shares declined by 3.3% on Wednesday, while SpaceX shares fell by 3.8%, contributing to the reduction in Musk’s estimated fortune.
Fortune reported that the combined market capitalization of the two companies fell from approximately $3.5 trillion on Tuesday night to $3.04 trillion by Thursday night.
The decline represents changes in the estimated value of Musk’s holdings rather than a direct cash payment or realized personal loss.
Political and business implications
The election results have also raised questions about the potential impact of a Democratic-controlled Congress on Musk’s business interests.
Democratic lawmakers have indicated plans to scrutinize his government-related activities, including his previous role at the Department of Government Efficiency and the federal contracts held by his companies.
The Associated Press reported that Musk’s political involvement and business relationships could face additional scrutiny, particularly in Texas, where Democrats also secured significant victories.
While the precise long-term financial and political consequences remain uncertain, the developments have placed Musk’s election spending, business interests and changing personal fortune under renewed international attention.
