European Union officials and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa prison authorities discussed ongoing prison reforms, digitalization initiatives, and future collaboration during a high-level meeting in Peshawar.
A high-level meeting between a European Union delegation and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Prison Department was held at Serena Hotel in Peshawar to review ongoing prison reforms, digital transformation initiatives, and future areas of cooperation.
The EU delegation, led by Ms. Ouna Kelly, met with Inspector General of Prisons Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Rehan Gul Khattak. The meeting was also attended by Dr. Sebastian Lorien, Chief Executive Officer of SHARP Pakistan, Deputy Inspector General (Judicial and Security) Amin Shoaib, Deputy Inspector General (Finance and Planning) Hashmatullah, and other senior officials.
Welcoming the delegation, Inspector General Rehan Gul Khattak expressed appreciation for the European Union’s continued support in modernizing the province’s prison system. He highlighted several reform and digitalization initiatives currently underway to improve prison administration and rehabilitation services.
The inspector general said these reforms are being implemented in line with the directives of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Suhail Khan Afridi and the Chief Minister’s Special Assistant for Prisons, Iftikhar Ullah Jan. He also briefed the delegation on professional training programs being conducted for prison staff at the Prisons Staff Training Academy in Haripur to strengthen institutional capacity.
During the meeting, the European Union delegation commended the Prison Department’s efforts to improve inmate welfare, rehabilitation, and prison management. The delegation reaffirmed its commitment to expanding cooperation with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Prison Department through SHARP Pakistan to further strengthen and sustain the ongoing reform process.
