Police are investigating the death of a 20-year-old International Islamic University student after her family reportedly found her location near a green belt close to Sunday Bazaar.
ISLAMABAD: Police are investigating the suspected suicide of a 20-year-old university student whose body was found on a green belt near Sunday Bazaar in Islamabad after she allegedly paid an agent Rs 5 million to facilitate her travel to the United States.
The deceased, identified as Laiba, was a student at the International Islamic University and lived in Sector G-10, according to police officials.
Police said her body was recovered within the jurisdiction of the Ramna police station. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding her death, including an alleged fraud involving documents related to her planned travel to the United States.
According to police officials, Laiba had paid Rs 5 million to an agent to arrange her departure for the United States. She reportedly came under severe mental stress after discovering that the documents provided in connection with the arrangement were allegedly fake.
Police said Laiba left her home at around 2 p.m. without informing her family. Her family later used her mobile phone’s location information to reach the green belt near Sunday Bazaar, where her body was found.
Officials said the circumstances appeared consistent with suicide, but they stressed that the investigation was underway and the cause and manner of death had not been conclusively established.
Police are also investigating the alleged agent’s role and the suspected financial fraud. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances in which the money was paid, the authenticity of the documents and the events leading up to the student’s death.
The postmortem report is expected to help clarify the circumstances of the death, police officials said.
The case has raised questions about the alleged use of fraudulent documents in arrangements for travel abroad. However, the allegations against the agent remain under investigation, and no further details about the agent’s identity or any potential arrest were provided in the information released by police.
Authorities have not yet announced their final findings. The investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding Laiba’s death and whether the alleged fraud contributed to the events preceding it.
