ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has intensified its investigations into alleged corruption and financial irregularities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including suspected misappropriation of public funds in development projects, while rejecting social media claims that an investigation involving Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has accelerated.

According to NAB sources, there has been no change in the status of the purported investigation against the JUI-F leader. The clarification follows the circulation of a video allegedly generated using artificial intelligence (AI), which claimed that the anti-graft watchdog had stepped up its inquiry into Fazlur Rehman.

The bureau’s broader investigations in the province are focused on suspected financial misconduct in development schemes, alleged embezzlement of government funds and questionable financial transactions. The cases involve allegations of significant losses to the national exchequer and possible violations of financial procedures.

During a recent television talk show, NAB’s director general of operations discussed ongoing investigations into alleged irregularities in development projects in Upper Kohistan. The cases include allegations of fraud worth billions of rupees, with investigators examining financial transactions, suspected illegal payments and the movement of funds to establish how the alleged irregularities occurred and who may have been involved.

One of the major cases under scrutiny involves an alleged fraud of more than Rs37 billion in Upper Kohistan. The suspected scheme reportedly involved the manipulation of government financial procedures to facilitate the alleged misappropriation of public money.

NAB has previously reported tracing assets worth billions of rupees and recovering substantial amounts in connection with the Upper Kohistan case. The investigation remains among the significant financial corruption cases being pursued by the bureau in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The bureau’s scrutiny also extends to urban development projects, where investigators are examining the handling of public funds and possible breaches of financial regulations.

The renewed focus on these cases comes amid heightened political tensions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following recent emergency measures and the imposition of governor’s rule in the province.

These developments have drawn greater public attention to government accountability, the management of provincial resources and the progress of investigations into alleged financial wrongdoing.

However, the claims circulating on social media about an accelerated investigation involving Fazlur Rehman remain distinct from the wider corruption inquiries underway in the province. NAB sources have rejected the reported change in the status of that purported investigation.

The Upper Kohistan case and other development-related inquiries continue to form part of the bureau’s broader efforts to examine alleged financial irregularities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The allegations remain subject to investigation, and responsibility for any wrongdoing must be established through the relevant legal process.
