Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directs authorities to simplify SME financing, strengthen SMEDA support, and introduce export-focused reforms to accelerate economic growth.
Pakistan has stepped up efforts to strengthen its export sector after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed authorities to make financing more accessible for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), describing the sector as a key driver of economic growth and employment.
Chairing a review meeting on the performance of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) in Islamabad, the prime minister instructed relevant institutions to develop a comprehensive strategy aimed at expanding exports while removing financial barriers faced by SMEs.
Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need for practical measures to improve the capacity of small businesses. He also called for greater support for farmers through awareness programs, technical assistance, and easier access to financing for agricultural commodities and fruit processing industries.
The prime minister further directed commercial banks to introduce dedicated financial products tailored for SMEs. He said entrepreneurs should receive assistance throughout the business development process, including feasibility studies, business planning, and project implementation.
Highlighting the importance of removing obstacles to SME growth on an urgent basis, Shehbaz Sharif instructed SMEDA to play a stronger role in supporting young entrepreneurs, particularly women, in establishing new businesses and expanding economic participation.
